Eastcore Linear Park

It’s all about connecting.

In response to one-on-one conversations, door knocking, and house gatherings through our City Shapers program, Eastcore residents and stakeholders identified the snowmelt walkway along Central Avenue as a physical and social asset. A core group of neighbors mobilized around an initiative to reimagine Central Avenue as a ‘linear park.’ This effort is a structural improvement that promotes social connectivity between neighbors, visitors, nonprofits, and business owners.

Come check it out!

Thanks to our committee of Eastcore residents, generous donations from Walters Gardens, a mini-grant from the City of Holland, and many helping hands, several improvements have already been made. Come explore Central Avenue, get to know our neighbors, and make yourself at home!

14th Street Church
Yard games highlight this stop along the Linear Park. Please feel welcomed to relax and stay a while.

2J’s “Third Space”
A “third space” is a common area where walkers are encouraged to rest, gather and converse, or enjoy fine weather. This project is supported by a City of Holland grant, donations, and many hours of volunteer work.

Cornerstone Youth Ministries
Flowers are planted along the street corners. A raised bed has been installed. Vegetables were planted for neighbors to share and enjoy.

Buster’s Labyrinth
Supported by a State of Michigan Neigborhood Enhancement Program (NEP) grant, neighbors and volunteers built and maintain the labyrinth garden at the corner of 18th Street and Central Avenue. The garden is named in honor of a friendly alley cat who had friends throughout Eastcore. Buster “supervised” all our work in his neighborhood and we remember him fondly.

Rally for the Alley
A multi-year effort by many of the families living along the alley between 18th and 19th Streets, Central and River Avenues. Neighbors built raised bed gardens to grow food and flowers to share. Other projects include fence building and repair, painting, installation of accents, and placing rain barrels. Visitors are welcomed to pass through.

Henry’s Corner
From the imagination of children living near 19th street, a gathering place is under construction for children and their parents to pause and play table games.

Evergreen Commons Community Garden
Evergreen Commons is reimagining the use of their Community Garden space.
The goal is to create inter-generational and neighborhood outreach programs. While planning is underway, volunteers are preparing the garden beds for use as a community garden during the summer of 2025.
